Choosing the Perfect Barrel Contour for Your Custom Rifle

October 4, 2024

At Preferred Barrels, we specialize in crafting custom gun barrels tailored to your specific needs. Whether you’re building a precision rifle, a rugged hunting companion, or a high-performance sporter, the contour of your barrel plays a crucial role in your firearm's overall performance and feel. But what exactly is a barrel contour, and how do you choose the right one for your rifle? Let’s dive in.

Understanding Barrel Contours

A barrel contour refers to the shape of the barrel, which can vary from straight to tapered. The contour affects not only the aesthetics of your rifle but also its weight, balance, and how it handles during firing. We categorize our contours at Preferred Barrels into three primary groups: Light, Medium, and Heavy. Each category is designed with different use cases and performance characteristics in mind.

Light Contours: Lightweight and Agile

If weight is your top priority, our light contours are an excellent choice. These barrels are designed to reduce the overall weight of your rifle, making them ideal for applications where maneuverability is essential, such as hunting or tactical use.

Pros of Light Contours:
  • Reduced Weight: Makes your rifle more manageable to carry over long distances.
  • Enhanced Handling: Improved balance and agility during rapid fire or movement.
Considerations:
  • Threading Conflicts: Lightweight barrels can sometimes create threading issues. For instance, light sporter barrels may have muzzle diameters too small to thread correctly. Each muzzle thread size has a minimum barrel diameter, and as the bore or caliber increases, the barrel's wall thickness decreases. This can lead to material that’s too thin to function effectively.
  • Caliber Limitations: Light contours are generally unsuitable for calibers larger than .308". If you plan to use larger calibers, you must choose a larger option, like a medium or heavy contour.
Available Light Contours:
  • Threaded:
    • Taperless 750
    • Light Palma
    • Tikka Lite Hybrid
  • Unthreaded:
    • 1 Sporter
    • 2 Sporter
    • Tikka Lite
For Calibers .311 and Larger:
  • Taperless 810+
  • Light Palma+
  • 3 Sporter+

Additional Tip: If you need your barrel to fit a specific stock, provide us with the necessary measurements to ensure a perfect fit. Don’t hesitate to give us a call to discuss your requirements.

Medium and Heavy Contours: Durability and Power

For those who require barrels that can withstand more abuse, our medium and heavy contours are the way to go. These barrels are built to handle larger bore diameters and are generally free from muzzle threading diameter conflicts, providing greater flexibility in your rifle’s design.

Pros:
  • Increased Durability: Ideal for high-stress applications and larger calibers.
  • Versatility: Capable of handling a more comprehensive range of calibers without threading issues.
Choosing Between Medium and Heavy:
  • Medium Contours: Offer a balance between weight and durability. Suitable for most general-purpose rifles.
  • Heavy Contours: These provide maximum durability and stability. They are perfect for rifles that will see extensive use or need to handle very large calibers.

Example: A Sporter 4 is lighter than a 900 Varmint, making it more muzzle-light and sporty, whereas the 900 Varmint offers greater heft and stability. Your choice depends on the specific performance characteristics you desire in your rifle.

Carbon Fiber Barrel Contours

In addition to our traditional barrels, we also offer carbon fiber barrels. These barrels combine carbon fiber's lightweight nature with the strength and durability needed for extended performance in a lightweight package. Carbon fiber barrels are an excellent choice for minimizing weight without the drawbacks of lightweight steel barrels.

Carbon barrels come in two different diameters based on shank diameter. Heavy Palma is the carbon contour for larger shank diameters: 1.15" and up, and the .900" Varmint contour for 1.125" and smaller.

Making the Right Choice

Selecting the proper barrel contour involves considering how you intend to use your rifle, the weight you’re comfortable handling, and the caliber you plan to shoot. Here are a few steps to help you decide:

  1. Determine Your Use Case: Are you building a rifle for hunting, target shooting, tactical use, or something else?
  2. Consider the Weight: How vital is the barrel's weight to your overall setup?
  3. Check Caliber Compatibility: Ensure your chosen contour can handle your desired caliber without threading or wall thickness issues.
  4. Fit to Stock: If you need a specific fit, provide measurements to ensure compatibility with your chosen stock.
